The kitchen drawer

Paplonka means "small drawer" in old Slovak.

It's the drawer where my grandmother kept her tea — labelled paper bags, a worn wooden scoop, a few cinnamon sticks tucked in for the smell. We named the shop after it because we wanted to make tea that earns a place there again.

Every blend is mixed by hand in our small Bratislava workshop. We source from European herb growers we've visited in person, and we try to keep things uncomplicated: real ingredients, named on the label, in a portion that fits a pantry shelf.

From the workshop

What's actually inside the tin.

You shouldn't need a botany degree to read a tea label. Every Paplonka blend lists every ingredient by its real name, in the order they sit in the pouch.

If we use rose, we mean petals from a single farm in Bulgaria — not "natural flavour." If a blend is caffeinated, we say so on the front. If it isn't suitable during pregnancy, we say that too.

A small ritual

How we brew, at home

Loose leaf takes a minute longer than a teabag. We think it's worth it. Here's how we do it on the kitchen counter.

01

Measure

One heaped teaspoon per cup. A wooden spoon is forgiving — the volume matters more than the gram.

02

Heat

Just off the boil for herbals (95°C). For green or rose blends, let the kettle rest a minute.

03

Steep

Five to seven minutes for a full-bodied cup. We don't bother timing it — a podcast track works.

04

Pour

Strain, sit somewhere quieter than the kitchen, and don't rush the first sip. That's the point.
